Leonard W. Francis
Camp Leo Diary

Starting in September, 1987 and continuing to at least November 1, LWF
produced a Camp Leo weekly diary, covering all manner of events, ranging from
cleaning toilets and other chores, to fund raising and complex legal actions.

The distribution list (as of 10-18-87) included:
Rev. Edward R. Townsend, Bishop Odore Gendron, Rev. Brendan Morrissey
Rev. Karl E. Dowd, Brother Felix Gilbert, Sister Pauline Lebel,
Atty. Robert W. Pillsbury, Hazel Lachmund, Thomas C. Tobey and
Richard Robertson, the Laconia Savings Bank (total of 11 names)

As to the reason, he states at the end of the Sunday, Oct. 25th entry:

"Why am I doing this? If the attorney for the Daniel Webster Council of
Boy Scouts is successful, I will be looking for a home and a job after almost
half a century at Camp Leo." (forty years would be closer to the truth....)
Perhaps it was also intended as evidence that he was diligently caring
for the now-disputed Camp Leo property....

Background: LWF had originally been barred from CL, but was allowed to feed
horses. This was seemingly extended for him act as caretaker, to reduce theft,
vandalism, etc. apparently by arrangement with Douglas Hill, the court-appointed
Conservator. Reading the entries, it is obvious that LWF fully expected to have
Camp Leo back in operation for the Summer of 1988....

The following entries are presented, with clarifications and comments.

"Resume of Week September 1 thru September 7"

9-1 Tuesday. Visited with Mr. (Douglas) Hill (Court-appointed Conservator)
Went to Hidden Valley (the BSA camp) and obtained key. (apparently LWF
was allowed on the CL property only to care for the horses, etc.)
Returned to Farmington after feeding horses. (his return address on
mail of this period is Box 161, Route 6, Laconia, NH 02346, actually
that of Camp Leo. But note, there are no further references to getting the
key to the property....)

9-2 Came to Camp, fed horses
Met (Fr.) Townsend in Village (GIWks?) saw Atty. Pillsbury.
Returned to camp and fixed lock on bathroom window, forced entry.
Called Tim Campbell the farrier (horseshoer)
Called Mr. Hill but could not reach him.

Visited Richard Robertson at NH Savings, taken to lunch by bank.
Mounted mower. (for hay cutting)
Telephone conversation with Mr. Hall.
Called Wetherbee about repair of Diesal generator. (LWF always used this
spelling of Diesel. Also "gasolene." A carry-over from Sea Bee days?)
Did the dishes that had accumulated.

A rainy day. Went to town for groceries.
Bought parts to repair mowing machine

Turned over a field of hay.
Put recharged battery in bulldozer.

(the) old forklift is worth more than their claim (appraisal?)

9-11 Drove to Boston and had lunch with Fr. Brendan Morrissey. (from the Saint
Lawrence Friary in Abington
, near Brockton, Mass.) Discussed staffing
problems and decided to write again to all religious orders. He expressed
concern about Fr. Townsend filing a "Pro Se" (for himself) appearance in
court. We decided to raise money to provide him with an attorney.
Drove to Uxbridge, Mass. and picked up Jeremy Dunlap and a friend "Jim"
(and) returned late in the evening.
(Also) had car inspected in Pittsfield. (quite a trip!)

9-12 Went to town for "Best Camper" award. (see 9-9)
Took boys to Weirs Beach - supplied them with money.
Went over the Kanamaugus Highway - the boys swam rapids (what river?)
Boys climbed Mt. Chocorua.
I did research in the Conway Library. Returned to camp and prepared
dinner for them. They were quite unhappy as TV would not work.
Jeremy is a most unusually fine fifteen year old. (He) has thought of
being either a priest or doctor. He is interested and very considerate
of other people. He was selected as our Best Camper when he was only
twelve (1984) I was pleased and surprised when he stated that he would
one day like to do my work.

9-13 Sunday No entries. (presumably they went to church....)

9-14 Everything very wet. We typed diary of previous week.
Typed Interrogatories for Mr. Cullimore (head of State Charitable
Associations Commission) and went to town to have them notarized.
Turned hay over - it is only suitable as mulch.
Repaired TV. Jeremy had it wrongly wired. (how did he feel about the
kid now?)

9-15 Went to Wolfeboro - talked with lawyer (ID?)
Returned and worked in office.
Afternoon spent baling hay - had much trouble with baler, the hay is
extremely thick and heavy.
Called Mr. Wetherbee to get estimate on repair of Diesal Generator -
(but) he is sick.
Called Sears Roebuck (Laconia) about gutters - referred me to Concord.

(Note this item!)
Found all of our directional signs had been torn down. As I attempted to
erect one, a man and a woman, in separate cars passed. The woman asked
if I was with Camp Leo (and) said "That figures(!)" The young man (in
the other car) screamed obscenities.

9-16 Sleepless night with toothache. Saw dentist at 8:45. Did root-canal
and gave me prescription (for pain?)
Visited Salvation Army Store and bought clothes.
To Laconia Hardware - bought shear bolts for baler. Cleaned office.

Reported removal of signs to state, local and Belmont (Belknap?) police.
Talked with Sears in Concord about gutters for house.
Called Robert Strang of the United Way, in further effort to get some
help. He is most considerate.
Worked at baling hay. Two lady farriers arrived.
(Another) call from William Mitzian, former student and camper. Believe
he is a dentist now.

9-18 Another rainy day. Worked at writing letters to obtain staff for next
summer.
RECEIVED CALL FROM LACONIA UNITED WAY WITH OFFER OF HELP!!!
Received another call from Walter Mitzian (he) told of many former
campers and students he is organizing. (are there two Mitizian boys?)

9-19 Removed, reglazed and puttied barn windows with materials supplied by
Fr. Townsend.
Took trash to town dump.
Cleaned horses' hooves and cleaned all stalls.
Used steel wool soap pads on kitchen floor tiles.
Received letter (9-16-87) from Louise Neville, daughter of Dr. Neville.
She is now a lawyer in NYC. She offered to serve as a board member
(on the Townsend Foundation) in place of her father who is now ill.
(in Ms. Neville's letter, she says instead that it is her mother, Mrs.
Robert J. Neville, whom she would replace. A resume was also enclosed.
JD from Loyola, 1981. NYC BA, 1983. Specialist at Chemical Bank.)

9-20 Sunday. Went to church at Sacred Heart in Laconia.
Used steel wool pads on bathroom floor.
Wrote more letters to religious orders. (They're hard up, too...!)
Letter to Mr. Hill
Prepared material for Russell pre-trial tomorrow.
Typed weekly resume (news letter)
Attempted to do dishes and take bath. No hot water (because of) no
fuel oil. As hot water is a must for State (Camp) Inspection, must
now (not?) delay.

9-21 through 10-4 not found

10-5 Monday. Prepared for filing a request that (previous) motion filed not
be heard, as it is now redundant.
Trouble with typewriter. Found it needs ribbon and erasure tape.
Drove to Brown & Saltmarsh in Concord. They supplied the wrong ribbon.
Visited Concord Typewriter Co. - same thing. Located one at Roger's
Stationary in Laconia at double price (!)
Ran into Richard Upton, an outstanding attorney who represented the (LF)
Association for many years.

10-6 Wrote to Upton asking him to represent me. Prepared envelopes for all
concerned to mail copies of request that motion (for Pro Confesso?) not
be heard.
Repaired "short" in underground electrical supply to cabins.
Spent afternoon grading around the cabins. Prepared trailer and tractor
to take boat from lake. (The) promised help did not appear.
Received copy of answer to petition as filled by Atty. Pillsbury. He
also asked that the matter be dismissed.
Called Red Cross in Laconia asking for copy of Certificate for Richard
Kinselle as waterfront director. Was told that they must consult their
Washington, DC legal department before supplying it.

10-7 A rainy day. Visit from Sears Roebuck in Concord concerning the house
gutters postponed to Thursday. (10-8)
Received call from Laconia Exchange Club asking I bring tape and VCR to
their meeting at Bonanza restaurant at six o'clock on Oct. 14.
Paper notarized and filed with Belknap Superior Court.
Cleaned dining area. Wrote to Mr. Hill asking for reimbursement.
Called Steve O'neill concerning wood chipping to be done. Talked with
his son, was told that he now has trucks, chipper and all necessary
equipment to do chipping.

10-8 Mr. Raymond Witham of Concord Sears Roebuck arrived and measured for new
gutters on the house.
Wrote to several more religious orders seeking help for next season.
Drove to Concord to return ribbon to Brown & Saltmarsh (!)
Visited with Sister Pauline Lebel, Secretary for Youth Services, Diocese
of Manchester and discussed obtaining a camp license. Told her of
filing four separate appeals, according to State Regulations, all of which
were ignored. She stated she would call Father Dowd and ask him to visit
Camp Leo.
Returned and cleaned barn.

10-9 Spent morning writing to religious communities to obtain help for next
year. Attempted to repair a leaking toilet (but) found we needed a plumber.
Called many (but) found most were extremely busy. (probably they were
closing up other camps and summer homes....)
Called Atty. Hill, who agreed to pay telephone bill. Told him of the
substantial bank balance. Requested funds to attend auction at Camp
Plumfield on Saturday (10-10) where there are many items needed by Camp Leo
to be sold. (I) was told to file petition with the court to obtain reimburse-
ment for personal money expended.
Visited Seaman's Electric Supply in Laconia to obtain covers for Electromode
baseboard heating. Gave me address of a manufacturer.
Called and found they would have to be made.
Tried to find money for the new Garland Range, being sold at the auction
and which we need very much. Called many friends, but they could do little
on such short notice. Called the Red Cross and learned they are sending a
letter stating that we did have a Certified Red Cross Waterfront Director
here last season, Richard Kinselle.
Wrote to Credit Bureau of New Hampshire, who admitted that they were
supplying false information and said they would revise the report and
send me a copy.

10-10 Received corrected report from Credit Bureau. (so quick?) Letter from
Red Cross. Bought horse feed. Flushed pipe line to cabins to rid
it of rust. Hauled six loads of topsoil to spread around cabin area.
Plumber arrived and repaired leaking toilet at beach area. (But) when
we tried to prime pump for it, the generator repeatedly cut out on overload.
He helped me put it in car to take back to Sears Roebuck in Concord. (I) now
believe that we should have allowed it to cool. (I) will do so with motor at
barn (as a load) before returning it.

10-11 Sunday. Mass at Sacred Heart in Laconia. A cold, driving rain made it
impossible to work out doors. Snow forecast for afternoon. (Did)
housework, laundry, typed weekly report. Prepared request for my reimburse-
ment of (SJ) Association to be presented in Court on Tuesday, Monday being
a holiday. (Columbus Day) Wrote to more religious orders.

10-12 A beautiful Columbus Day, ideal for outside work. Picked up mulch hay
bales from field. Used backhoe to remove generator from trunk of car.
Adjusted overload mechanism and tested it on a large motor at the barn.
Took it to beach, tested it with long extension cord and installed it
in pump house. It now works well, plenty of water for beach toilet.
Put battery in motor boat and pumped it out. Could not lower propeller
as solenoid appears wet. Took battery back to charger. Perhaps with
stronger battery the propeller can be lowered. Scrubbed several of the
cabin toilets. Picked up horse blankets left in field. Did laundry.
Typed motion requesting reimbursement of personal money expended on
Association expenses. Addressed envelopes to all of the Attys.

10-13 Received early call from the farrier concerning Tara (the pony.)
One hour spent each day on housework.
Wrote several letters to religious communities.
Farrier arrived in late afternoon.
Attempted to buy animal food at bakery - none available.
Telephone man found a dead short in one of the lines. (vandalism?)
Received call from Mr. Kardinal.

10-14 Worked at fine grading about the cabins.
Wrote more letters to religious organizations, seeking help for next summer
Visited Atty. Warren Lake in Gilford (north of Laconia) A young lawyer
who promised to call me on Friday (10-9)
Talked to Exchange Club at Bonanza Restaurant and showed VCR tape of (old!)
camp activities and trips. Found them very interested in CL. One member,
a Mr. French volunteered to help remove boat from lake.
Bought gasolene for beach (pump) generator.

10-15 Started to contact old campers by postcard. Wrote to Br. Raymond and
two religious orders.
Vacuumed cabins and spread more topsoil.
A visit from Yankee Industrial about the fork-lift.
Each night (I) allow water to run slowly in cabins to prevent freezing.
Plan to wash cabin floors tomorrow.
Battery on farm tractor dead - put on charger.
Called Ivers Wetherbee the electrician - he promised to come Tuesday AM.
Wrote to Mitzian and asked him to obtain telephone directories of the
Greater NY Area.
Straightened utility pole in field & emptied soft drink machine and put
cans in the storeroom.

10-16 A beautiful Indian Summer day. Wrote to Br. Felix to obtain telephone
directories for Quebec City and Montreal. Mopped cabin floors, scrubbed
toilets and cleaned the beach toilet.
A lot of trouble with pump at waterfront. Called plumber to help. The
water friction causing the cold water line to steam (as) the toilet
building is high on the hill above the pump. Many trips up and down left
me exhausted.
Cleaned hooves of horses. Tara the pony doing very well.

10-17 While I was away many buildings were entered. "Bird Cage" had boarded
up windows that were stript (??) The canteen and electronics building
doors were forced. In the dining area and infirmary (was) writing on
walls: "Stacy was here. Kim was here, etc." Appears that cabins had been
slept in. (no report to police?)
Spent the entire day bringing motor boat across lake, the promised help
did not appear. Quit at 5 PM with boat stuck on sand bar. Could not get the
propeller to go down. (inboard motor?)

10-18 Sunday. Mass at Sacred Heart Church (in Laconia)
Talked with Hazel Lachmund, asked if it would be possible for her son,
Paul, to visit. She questioned the logic of my detailed weekly report.
Discussed the time and place for semi-annual meeting. Told of Father
Brendan's willingness to have at St. Lawrence in Abington, Mass.
Received a call from Steve O'neill's partner, who said they would like
to get the wood chipping started soon. (I) told him to get in touch with
Attorney Hill (the Conservator)
Talked with Frank Meunier, the blind teacher (at St. James).
In afternoon cleaned marks from cabin floors in preparation for waxing.
Cleaned barn. Much more work when horses are in barn at night.

Why am I doing this? If the attorney for the Daniel Webster Council of
Boy Scouts is successful, I will be looking for a home and a job after
almost half a century at Camp Leo." (forty years would be closer....)

Distribution: (see top of page)

[Letter, dated October 18 on St. James School/Laconia letterhead to Fr.
Townsend in Gatineau, PQ J8T 2WI, concerning semi-annual meeting of St.
James Asso. at Abington. Mention that he and Mrs. Lachmund still under Court
Order not to enter CL. Thinks it may be dismissed, due to filed requests by
LWF and Atty. Pillsbury. We must vote on nominations to board of directors
(of St James Asso.) of Dr. Joseph Stetz & Louise Neville. "I hope that these
young people will help recruit religious staff. Something the Bishop very
much favored." Mention that the chipping project could realize up to $1000
per week from "junk" trees and also improve the woodlands.
Copies to Fr. Brendan Morrissey, Br. Felix Gilbert & Mrs. L. ]

Note: The St. Lawrence Friary,
Abbington,* [s/b Abington] Mass., probably defunct, and Rev.
Morrissey, its abbot, deceased.

10-19 Took motor boat from the lake, without help. Had to pull it across lake
with rowboat as it was impossible to lower propeller. Plumber did not show
up so worked at repairing the beach pump (and) now it works good.
Visited Veterans' Hospital in Manchester for routine checkup. Was advised
that a rupture (hernia) had developed. Told not to work so hard.
Returned and cleaned barn. (LWF's stubborn streak again...!)

10-20 Went to Boston for examination by a surgeon. he reported there is
nothing to be concerned about but said again I should do no heavy lifting.
Returned and pulled (the) electric fork-lift out of the barn with (the)
bulldozer. (stubborn to the end....)
Started to move shelving, etc, to expose Diesal generator for the
electrician to come Wednesday. Bought gasolene to start engine.
Wrote to Mrs. Makowski in Florida. Her son was an outstanding camper
here in 1983. He asked for a job this past summer. We sent him $179
for round trip air ticket to Manchester. He did not come, so I have
written to him several times asking him to return the money.

10-21 Worked with Mr. Wetherbee, the generator technician until 1 PM. (But)
could not get it up to speed for testing. Asked for his estimate on
putting it into operation, but said this was not possible without
starting it. We found that it needed both Diesal fuel and new ignition
wires. It is a semi-diesal, as it starts on gasolene and is then
changed over to Diesal fuel. My father (Harry B. Francis) installed
many of these machines and I worked with him many years ago. (It seems
strange that with all his experience LWF didn't see this aspect, as well
as in the case of the generator field winding, CL-NL 10-23, below.)
Repaired battery charger, as we had discharged three batteries.
Wetherbee located the problem with the motor boat.
Quit work early, as it was raining heavily.

10-22 Housecleaning. Did the stove oven. Probably the dirtiest job I have
ever done. Started pump on the beach and exercised generator.
Gave kitchen a thorough cleaning. Wrote to Brother John Gleason.
Received letter from Viatorian Provincial in Canada stating they could
give us no help. Wrote to Msgr. Drabik of Marian Fathers, who answered my
letter last year. He stated (then) that they once had a camp and would very
much like to have one again, as it would provide vocations. (but no cash or
other assistance, apparently....)

10-23 Obtained fuel for generator (motor) and was able to run it on Diesal
fuel. (But) it would not generate electricity. Believe that it needs
to be "excited" a process where an outside direct current is shunted
across the fields causing them to be magnetized. Called Mr. Wetherbee
for help and he agreed to come on Tuesday. (10-27)
I received notice from the Belknap Superior Court - Judge Murphy - that
I must give Mr. Cullimore $200 within 30 days. Attempted to see Dana
Zukor the Clerk of the Court, who examined the motion and found it in
order. Mr. Cullimore is an Assistant Attorney General (as well as the
Director of Charitable Trusts) and receives a substantial salary. The
award of this money is accordingly a punitive action. Perhaps someone
will tell me what I have done that is wrong. *
I waited to hear from Fr. Dowd, who had indicated that he would visit by
the end of the week.
Brought in many paint cans to prevent freezing.

*[LWF failed to notify Mr. Cullimore that he had withdrawn the motions
scheduled for hearing on 10-22-87, causing Cullimore to appear for
nothing at Laconia Superior Court and was accordingly fined $200 for
"costs." Again, LWF seems to confuse an individual with the person's
office, as back in Berlin during the Building Inspector litigation,
which was pursued all the up to the Conn. Supreme Court...which found
both for the Town and the Inspector.]

10-24 As people leave, the wild life returns. A beautiful red fox is often
seen on the athletic field, a big, black bushy tail tipped with white.
I have been very close to him (but) he does not seem to have any fear.
A huge raccoon was on the porch, holding up the grain barrel cover with
one hand. Deer are seen in the field every morning. Mice are now
coming into the house from the fields. Tommy, our cat, lets them know
they are not welcome.
Sent out many postcards to old campers and students. We plan to make a
directory of addresses and occupations.
Found a flat tire on the Ford Escort. Put on the temporary spare.
Wrote to Br. Marcel Plante, Provincial of Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

10-25 Sunday. Went to Sacred Heart Church in Laconia.
There seems to be a great deal to cleaning properly. While I graduated
from Yale School of Engineering, did graduate work (there) in Education
and took courses at Univ. of Southern California, Union College (NY) and
the Univ. of Connecticut, I now find that most useful which I learned from
a retarded employee who came to us from the Southbury (Conn.) Training School
(Probably the SJ cook, George Crane).
Comments from those who receive this weekly report would be appreciated.
Why am I doing it? If the attorney for the Daniel Webster Council of Boy
Scouts is successful, I will be looking for a home and a job after almost
half a century at Camp Leo." (forty years would be closer to the truth.
Perhaps he is using it as a record of his devoted care to the [now former]
Camp Leo property....)

10-26 Took old toilet apart to get parts for beach toilet. Installed valve
and flush mechanism. Went to town for food and horse feed. Cleaned
plastic cloths in dining area. Cleaned entrance way and scrubbed
stair treads in house.

10-27 (Decree of Pro Confesso granted in Laconia Superior Court against LWF,
Fr. Townsend, and Mrs. Lachmund in the matter of their management of
the Saint James Association and its Camp Leo property.)

Went to village for "flapper" control (for toilet). Visited court
and talked with Clerk Dana Zucker and Thelma Mudgatt, one of his
assistants. He suggested I file a "Motion to Strike" in the matter
where I was penalized $200. Inquired about my Motion for Reimbursement.

10-28 Cleaned kitchen and applied "Future" to stair treads as a protective
coating. Scrubbed small toilet rooms in cabins. Some of the glue used
to cement the vinyl (flooring) was on the (tile) surface.
Help is not only difficult to obtain - it is impossible (even) when we
do have the money to pay the high wages being asked.
(Had) a call from a young man being required by the Court to do twenty
five hours of charity work. (see Nov. 1 entry)
Talked with Brother Felix on telephone.

10-29 (Mr.) Ivers Wetherbee, the generator technician arrived. Worked with
him until three in afternoon. After a long struggle the generator now
works fine.
Called Atty. Warren Lake, who has been trying to reach Atty. Pillsbury.

10-30 Called Father Dowd (but) he is away until Sunday evening. (Pastor at
St. Christopher RC Church in Nashua)
Called Atty. Kevin Sullivan - believe he was once a camper. *
Visited Superior Court (Laconia) and was assured of an early pre-trial
(hearing?) probably Nov. 12. Filed Objection to "Pro Confesso" decree,
and made motion to strike order of October 22, where I am required to
give Attorney Cullimore $200 (for failure to notify him of withdrawal
of motion/s) and filed objection to set scheduling conference, as was
filed by Attorney McLaughlin. (quite the litigious day!)
* A Kevin Sullivan of Webster, Mass. appeared in the 1952 Enrollment
Roster, in the April, 1952 Camp Leo News, along with a David Sullivan, also
of Webster....

10-31 (Halloween) Bought antifreeze for Diesal Generator, paper towels for
cleaning windows. Cleaned barn and the horses' hooves. Took down
storm windows for cleaning, had to bring them inside, as (it was) an
extremely windy day.

11-1 (All Saints Sunday) Went to church at Sacred Heart.
Peter - a young man referred to me by the United Way as a volunteer -
arrived. I was at first concerned, as he had been ordered by the court
to do volunteer work for a charity as a punitive measure. He worked
with me throughout the day. A fine day for outside work and much was
accomplished. It brought back memories of boys from correctional
facilities with whom we have worked, and the "lifer" who did an out-
standing job as a caretaker at St. James School. ("Steve")

(Last available entry, mailed 2 Nov., 1987.)

End of the Trail.... Whatever any further news-letters might have been
forthcoming, and for all of Francis' determined maintenance efforts,
Camp Leo would never reopen. After protracted litigation, the property
reverted to the Daniel Webster Council, and was renamed "Camp Bell," in
honor of a local attorney and long-time supporter of Scouting....
