Camp Leo - Early History
 

  • 1945 Leonard Francis acquires a vacant Boy Scout camp on Manning Lake, NH.

    •  Fr. Keating, pastor of Saint Joseph's Church in New Haven, names the camp after Leo XIII.

    • Leo Foundation incorporated as tax-exempt entity.

  • 1946 - Camp Leo opens with Cub Scout Pack No. 24 as its cadre.

  • 1951 - Enrollment reached 144

    • Staff of two dozen, mostly Brothers and seminarians

    • Arthur N. Sheriff, headmaster of Cheshire Academy, "honored" with his portrait in Camp's 1951 catalog.

  • 1952....

    • The weekly Catholic transcript, ceased carrying Camp Leo ads

  • 1986

    • June - Closed down by Superior Court Action.

    • $600,000 in liens attached to property

    • Daniel Webster Council, BSA, seeks to recover its former property.

  • 1988 - October

    • Court decree dissolved the maze of corporate facades, cross-mortgages and interlocking property assignments, ordering all assets placed under an Administrator for liquidation.

  • 1990

    • After forty-five year separation, Camp Leo returned to the Boy Scouts and is now Camp Bell.
